Context: Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is to repeal ‘Regulation on Quality of Service of Dial-up and Leased Line Internet Access Service, 2001’. This is because the last dial-up Internet connection was switched off in India in March 2021 and India has no dial-up users now.
Dial-up Internet
- Dial-up Internet access uses the facilities of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to establish a connection to an Internet service provider (ISP) by dialling a telephone number on a conventional telephone line.
- Dial-up Internet access operates through a standard telephone line.
- By running the telephone line to a modem device in the computer and configuring it to dial a specific phone number, the computer can connect to the Internet.
- Dial-up Internet speeds are theoretically capable of reaching a maximum speed of 56 kilobits per second.
- This connection type is usually inexpensive, but slow and has less available bandwidth. They may not be adequate for users who use the web for multimedia and other high-bandwidth applications.
