Sample Answer
Introduction
India has the world's fourth largest wind power capacity due to high onshore potential. However, nearly 70% is concentrated in a few states showing limited spatial spread. Wind energy's huge promise remains underexploited.
Body
Potential of wind energy in India:
- India has a long coastline and warm tropical climate make it suitable to reap its natural wind energy potential.
- India's estimated wind power potential at 120m height is 695 GW.
- India’s offshore wind potential is about 174 GW.
- Highest potential lies in 7 states of Gujrat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, T.N, M.P, Maharashtra and Andhra.

Despite this high potential, its spatial spread in India is limited because:
- Wind plants require specific site conditions like tops of hills; open plains and water; mountain gaps that funnel and intensify wind.
- Lack of diurnal reversal of winds as most of the states are not coastal.
- Limited exploitation of offshore wind capacity.
- More emphasis on Solar energy.
Conclusion
Therefore, steps to harness offshore winds, Increase hub height, deploy larger turbines and streamline transmission systems must be taken to tap the true potential of wind energy in India.
