Context: In a significant development, contract negotiations between the governments of India and France in the over ₹50,000 crore deal for 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets are scheduled to begin on May 30 with the arrival of a high-level French team here.
About Rafale
The Dassault Rafale, literally meaning "gust of wind", or "burst of fire" in a more military sense) is a French twin-engine, canard delta wing, multirole fighter aircraft designed and built by Dassault Aviation. Equipped with a wide range of weapons, the Rafale is intended to perform air supremacy, interdiction, aerial reconnaissance, ground support, in-depth strike, anti-ship strike and nuclear deterrence missions. It is referred to as an "omnirole" 4.5th generation aircraft by Dassault.

A multirole combat aircraft (MRCA) is a combat aircraft intended to perform different roles in combat. These roles can include air to air combat, air support, aerial bombing, reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and suppression of air defenses.
Key Differences Between Naval Fighter Jets and Air Force Fighter Jets
- Launch and Recovery Operations: Naval fighter jets are specifically engineered for the unique challenges of carrier-based operations. They feature reinforced landing gear and stronger airframes to withstand high-impact landings and catapult launches. Additionally, they are built to endure the corrosive effects of saltwater environments.
- Folding Wings: A notable feature of many naval fighter jets is their foldable wings, which help maximize space on the limited decks of aircraft carriers.
- Size and Range: Naval fighter jets are typically smaller and lighter than their Air Force counterparts. This design adaptation is necessary due to the restricted space available on aircraft carrier decks.
- Avionics and Sensors: Naval fighter jets are equipped with advanced avionics and sensors tailored for maritime operations. This includes specialized radar systems for detecting naval targets such as ships and submarines, and enhanced navigation systems designed for over-water navigation. They also possess communication devices suited for coordination with naval forces.
- Corrosion Resistance: To withstand the harsh maritime environment, naval fighter jets are constructed using corrosion-resistant materials and coatings, ensuring durability and reliability in salty conditions.
