The Machkund Hydroelectric Project is an important hydropower project situated in the Koraput district of Odisha along the border with Andhra Pradesh. It is built on the Machkund River, a tributary of the Godavari River system, near the famous Duduma Falls in the Eastern Ghats.

The project has a power generation capacity of 120 MW and is jointly managed by the Governments of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, making it one of India’s significant inter-state hydroelectric projects.

The Jalaput Dam and its reservoir provide water support for the functioning of the project.

Historical Background

The project was originally envisioned in the 1920s by Maharaja Vikram Dev Varma of Jeypore, who aimed to provide electricity to nearby villages and promote regional development.

Construction of the project began in 1948, shortly after India’s independence, and commercial operations started in 1955.

The project was formally inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India.
