Why in News?

The deployment of high-capacity harvester machines at Ambazari Lake in Nagpur has accelerated efforts to remove the massive spread of water hyacinth, an invasive aquatic weed that has severely affected the lake’s ecosystem.

Ambazari Lake

Ambazari Lake is located near the south-western border of Nagpur in the state of Maharashtra. It is the oldest and largest among the eleven lakes of Nagpur city.

The lake was built in 1870 during the rule of the Bhonsle dynasty. It was constructed primarily as a reservoir to supply water to Nagpur and served the city’s water needs for more than three decades.

The origin of the Nag River is linked to Ambazari Lake. The name “Ambazari” comes from the Marathi word Amba, meaning mango, because the region around the lake once had a large number of mango trees.

A famous public garden, known as Ambazari Garden, was developed beside the lake in 1958, making it a major recreational and tourist attraction.

Key Facts about Ambazari Lake

  • Location: Nagpur, Maharashtra
  • Built in: 1870
  • Built by: Bhonsle dynasty
  • Type: Artificial reservoir lake
  • Importance: Water supply, recreation, biodiversity
  • Connected River: Nag River

Water Hyacinth: A Growing Ecological Threat

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is an invasive aquatic plant native to South America. It spreads rapidly over water bodies and forms dense mats on the surface.

Problems Caused by Water Hyacinth

  • Reduces dissolved oxygen in water
  • Blocks sunlight penetration
  • Harms aquatic biodiversity
  • Increases mosquito breeding
  • Obstructs fishing and boating activities
  • Accelerates eutrophication of lakes

The spread of water hyacinth in Ambazari Lake had become a major environmental challenge, affecting both the ecology and aesthetics of the lake.

Use of Harvester Machines

To tackle the issue, authorities deployed high-capacity harvester machines capable of cutting and removing large quantities of aquatic weeds from the lake surface.

Benefits of the Initiative

  • Faster removal of invasive weeds
  • Restoration of water flow
  • Improvement in water quality
  • Better oxygen availability for aquatic life
  • Enhancement of tourism and recreation

Such mechanized cleaning methods are increasingly being adopted in urban lake restoration projects across India.

Importance of Urban Lakes

Urban lakes like Ambazari play a crucial role in environmental sustainability.

Ecological Importance

  • Groundwater recharge
  • Flood control
  • Habitat for birds and aquatic species
  • Climate moderation

Economic and Social Importance

  • Tourism and recreation
  • Source of livelihood
  • Improvement in urban aesthetics

Conservation of urban lakes is essential for sustainable urban development.

Government Measures for Wetland and Lake Conservation

India has undertaken several initiatives for wetland and lake conservation:

  • National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA)
  • Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017
  • AMRUT Mission for urban rejuvenation
  • State-level lake restoration programmes

These measures aim to improve water quality, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable management of urban water bodies.

Conclusion

Ambazari Lake represents both the ecological heritage and urban identity of Nagpur. The recent deployment of harvester machines highlights the growing importance of scientific and sustainable management of urban water bodies. Protecting lakes from invasive species such as water hyacinth is essential for maintaining biodiversity, ensuring water security, and promoting sustainable urban development.
