Manipur has a total of 16 districts. So, long back, when the state had only 9 districts, the government needed to add a few more districts in Manipur.

In 2016, 7 new districts were added; now, which were those new states? The districts added by the State Cabinet were Kamjong, Jiribam, Noney, Kakchinf, Tennopaul, Kangkopai, and Pherzawl. So, to create these 7 districts, the existing hill districts of Manipur were bifurcated.

  • Churachandpur district got a sibling! A new district called Pherzawl was created after Churachandpur was split.
  • Tamenglong district wasn't alone anymore. It was divided into two new districts: Noney and the remaining Tamenglong.
  • Senapati district had a friendly split. A new district named Kangpokpi was formed alongside the existing Senapati district.
  • Ukhrul district also got a partner. It was divided into Kamjong and the remaining Ukhrul district.
  • Similar changes happened in the Chandel district. A new district called Tengnoupal was created, leaving behind a smaller Chandel district.
