The total number of districts in Assam is 35. These districts are divided into Central Assam, Lower Assam, Upper Assam, Barak Valley, and North Assam. A district magistrate governs these districts in the state. The division of Assam districts allows for better regional administrative control.

How many districts are in Assam?
The districts are classified by several attributes, including the rivers, hills, forests, etc. Most of the new districts are derived from subdivisions of the earlier districts.
Before 15 August 2015, only 27 districts, of which 3 new districts had been created: Charaideo, South Salmara-Mankachar, and West Karbi Anglong.
Located in the Indian state of Assam, it was also declared as a district on 27 June 2016. The largest district of Assam in terms of its area is Karbi Anglong, with almost 10, 434 square kilometers of un-divided area, while the second largest is Sonitpur has an area of 5324 square kilometers only. Majuli is India's first-ever river island district in the Jorhat's northern region.

History of Districts in Assam
Here, we will discuss some major changes that have taken place in Assam since India’s Independence. Let’s check out:
- At the time of independence, Assam only has 13 existing districts.
- In November 1951, the newly formed North Cachar Hills district was created out of the Golaghat, Nagaon, Cachar, Jayantia, Naga Hills, and United Mikir districts.
- Districts formed in the year 1983 are the Sonitpur district of Assam, which was a part of Darrang; Barpeta district; Jorhat district from Sibsagar; Karimganj district from Cachar as well as the Dhubri district and Kokrajhar of Goalpara.
- 2015, on Independence Day of India, the then Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, declared the government's intent to create five new districts in Assam. This enhanced the number of districts from 27 to 35 churned across the state.
