Union territory and capital of Haryana is Chandigarh. Hence, Chandigarh works as a city and district and, at the same time, as a union territory. Chandigarh is the union territory and the capital of two states, Haryana and Punjab.

The city is not in the two states and comes under the union government of the country if there is one.

History & Significance

The histories of the formation of both the union territory and the city of Chandigarh are equally associated with the formation of the Indo-Pakistan partition in 1947. India had Punjab as a province, which, after the division of India began, separated into East Punjab in India and West Punjab in Pakistan.

Lahore was once the capital and was located in west Punjab, Pakistan. The old city in East Punjab in India desired to build a new one.

Therefore, the first Prime Minister of India, Mr Jawaharlal Nehru, planned to build a new city, and Chandigarh came into existence.

The layout and design of the city were done by the famous Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, and most of the government buildings and houses were designed by him.

Chandigarh is located in northwest India, it is located at an average elevation of 321 meters and shares the border with Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh is said to be the city of beautiful.

The total size of the state is approximately 44 212 square kilometres. The state's administrative and business hub is Chandigarh. However, this city also belongs to the neighbouring state – Punjab.

Most of the land of Haryana is the Alluvial plain, which is a part of the great Indo-Gangetic plain under Agriculture; Haryana is highly fertile and agricultural.

The southern region of the state also has the Aravalli range, thus giving it some portion of hilly and uneven land beside the relatively flat region. The Yamuna River defines the easternmost border with the state of Uttar Pradesh, and this has enriched the state's agricultural produce.

Haryana has 6 administrative divisions, 22 districts, 73 sub-divisions, 93 revenue tehsils, 50 sub tehsils, 142 community development blocks, 154 cities and towns, along with 7030 villages. 

The High Court of Punjab and Haryana, which is based in Chandigarh, caters to the needs of the states of Punjab and Haryana and the union territory of Chandigarh.
