Madhika language (Kerala) to be extinct

Context: Madhika language spoken by Chakaliya community, in Kannur district in Kerala is on the brink of extinction.

Madhika Language

  • The language has no script of its own. 
  • With just the last two speakers belonging to the Chakaliya community, the language will be lost to the world. 
  • Influences: Blend of Telugu, Tulu, Kannada, and Malayalam. The language shows greater influence of Havyaka Kannada (an old form of Kannada). 
  • Madhika, like many other native languages, is pushed into oblivion by Malayalam (dominating language). 
  • Also, the social stigma associated with the Chakaliya community led to the neglect of the language.

Chakaliya Community

  • Chakaliya community in northern Malabar region, migrated from the hilly regions of Karnataka. 
  • The community was initially recognised as a Scheduled Tribe, but was later included in the Scheduled caste category in Kerala.

  1. Kubi:

  • Konda-Dora, also known as Konda or Kubi, is a Dravidian language spoken in India.

It is spoken by the scheduled tribe of the Konda-Dora, who mostly live in the districts of Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, and East Godavari in Andhra Pradesh, and the Koraput district in Odisha.
