History of Kashmir

Sikandar Shah (1389-1413 AD)

  • Vehemently persecuted Brahmins in valley and imposed Jizya on Hindus.

Zainul Abidin (1420-70 AD)

  • Conciliated with Hindus and restored their temples. Abolished Jizya and cow slaughter and to respect Hindu traditions withdrew ban from Sati.
  • Constructed Zaina Lanka, artificial island on Woolur Lake on which he built a palace and a mosque.
  • Ordered translation of Mahabharata and Rajatarangini into Kashmiri.
