Tanjore Painting

  • This school of painting developed in Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu under the patronage of Marathas (Serfoji Maharaj) in 18th century.
  • These decorative paintings are created on glass and board instead of cloth and vellum preferred in north India. They use brilliant colours and there is liberal use of gold leaf, gemstones and cut glasses for embellishments.
  • Themes revolve around smiling Krishna.
