Literature of Imperial Chola

  1. Historical works:
  • Kalingathu Parani (The War of Kalinga): A 12th century Tamil Poem and war-song by Jayangondar. The poetry celebrates the victory of Kulottunga I over the Kalinga king, Anantavarman Chodaganga in Chola-Kalinga War. The poetry eulogises Chola military efforts and notes that Cholas killed over a thousand elephants in the war. 

2. Religious works:

  • Ramavataram (popularly known as Kamba Ramayanam): A Tamil epic based on Valmiki’s Ramayan written by Tamil poet Kamban in 12th century.  The story describes the life of King Rama of Ayodhya, considered to be the greatest work in Tamil Literature.
  • Periya Puranam (Great Purana or Epic; also known as Tiruttontarpuranam (Purana of the Holy Devotees): A Tamil poetic account of lives of 63 Nayanars, canonical poets of Tamil Shaivism. It was authored by Sekkizhar, who was a minister in the court of Kulottunga II. Due to the highest order of literary style Periya Puranam is considered as fifth veda in Tamil Nadu and has been included as the 12th and last book in Tamil Shavism canon.
