Arguments for considering Gupta Age as Golden Age
- Cultural Renaissance:. It was a time of immense cultural renaissance, with great advancements in fields such as mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and architecture.
- Legal codes: For the first time civil and criminal law were defined and demarcated.
- Literature: Great personage like Kalidasa, Amarsinha, Dhanavantri, Aryabhatta, Varahamihira etc. lived during this period.
- Patronage of the Arts: The Gupta rulers were great patrons of the arts. They provided generous support and patronage to poets, scholars, artists, and architects like Nagara Style of Temple Architecture, creation of magnificent sculptures, paintings, and architectural marvels. The Ajanta and Ellora caves, for example, showcase the exquisite Gupta artistry.
- Decentralisation: Decentralised of administration authority began.
- Example: During Maurya’s city committee was appointed by government while during Gupta period, it was comprised of local reprentatives.
- Political Stability: Foreign rule was completely removed and peace and prosperity prevailed.The government exhibited an enlightened character, with minimal taxation, lenient punishments, and other similar attributes.
- Religious Tolerance: The Gupta rulers practiced religious tolerance and supported various religious beliefs, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
Arguments against considering Gupta Age as Golden Age
- Decline of trade and Guilds
- Existence of too many feudatories
- Absence of large Central army and Bureaucracy
- Development of Feudal elements (Increasing land grants, Serfdom, Sub-infeudation etc.)
- Decline of urban centres.
- Increasing Varna distinction and social disorder: The caste system was prevalent, and social mobility was limited. Practice of untouchability had slowly begun.
- Forced labour or Vishti was practiced in royal army.
- Decline in status of women: Evidence of Sati (Eran inscription),polygamy.
- Regional focus: The Empire was primarily centered in the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent.
