Architecture of Imperial Chola

  • Chola were master temple builders and perfected the art of building structural temples which initiated by the Pallavas before them. They near perfected the idiom and classical style of Dravidian temple building in southern India.
  • Most prominent temples of Cholas are Brihadeshwara Temple, Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple and Darasuram Temple.
  • The temples of Cholas are enriched with gracefully modelled contour of figurers having flexed poses, delicate ornamentation and pleasing faces. Influence of Chola art can be felt even in Sri Lanka and present-day Indonesia.
  • Chola temples have many beautiful wall paintings. Eyes in Chola paintings are wide open unlike those in Ajanta paintings. The paintings are full of movement and vitality.

Sculptures of Cholas

  • Stone sculptures: The temples of Cholas are enriched with gracefully modelled contour of figurers having flexed poses, delicate ornamentation and pleasing faces. Influence of Chola art can be felt even in Sri Lanka and present-day Indonesia.
  • Metal sculptures: Cholas utilised the lost-wax technique to make beautiful bronze sculptures of dancing Shiva, Nataraja.
