Music of Delhi Sultanate

  • Turks had inherited a rich musical tradition from Arabs. New musical instruments such as rabab and sarangi were introduced. Sufism and Bhakti movement further gave impetus to the musical style.
  • Amir Khusrau and Sufi Saint Pir Bodhan are pioneers of this phase.
  • Coming of Turks to India brought Perso-Arabic airs (ragas), such as aiman, ghora, sanam etc. Indian classical work on music Raga Darpan was translated to Persian during the reign of Firuz Tughlaq.
  • Raja Man Singh of Gwalior was a great music lover (Man Kautuhal of his reign included musical nodes of Muslims).
